Hey, there! I know it’s only Tuesday, but today I am doing something a little different. I know that I’m tough with you guys about trying new things. What is it I say? “Nothing great happens in the comfort zone.” Wait. I probably poached that off NYTBSA Bob Mayer. Anyway, the sentiment remains. We don’t grow when we are comfortable, and trust me when I say that vlogging was NOT at all comfortable. And I am TOTALLY bummed that the editing process cut off my T-shirt that said “Geek Chic.” Sigh. What is the point of dressing up if no one can see your fancy clothes?
Oh well.
One thing I’ve always tried to impress upon you guys is that I am not above my own advice, and I will never ask anything from y’all that I am unwilling to do as well. So this is my first vlog, and there will be more to come. This is my chance to say hello to all of you and make that digital kick in the tuchus feel much more special and personal, because it is. I love you guys and want to help all of you reach your dreams. Thanks for your time, and thanks for helping spread WANA-The Love Revolution. Okay, I am assuming you really want to know…
I learned from Mac several years ago. I saw a gal with GORGEOUS makeup and she worked at the Mac counter, so I paid for a makeover and watched carefully. One thing I learned is that it really does pay to get eye makeup from a better brand–Sephora, Mac, etc–because they contain A LOT more pigment so the color is richer. Thus, you use A LOT less. The shadows I use are more costly but they last a LONG time and you don’t keep having to redo your eye makeup all day. I use Sephora photo-finish as a base (got as a free sample), then a mineral foundation from Sephora ($20). Mac blush and Too-Faced eye shadow (A palette of 12 colors–Smoky Eye–is roughly $30). Bronzer by Too Faced and a photo-finish powder by Urban Decay. Long-wear lipstick by Sephora ($9). And, since I wear makeup once in a blue moon, mine lasts a looong time and Ulta 3 Loves me. Normally I am in a scrunchee with no makeup, LOL.

My go to makeup comes from the grocery store now, but I hear ya on the longer-lasting-thus-ultimately-less-expensive aspect. Thanks for the info!

As for what topics to talk about, I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on Pinterest, which is something I enjoy and think could be great for authors to expand their audience. And Goodreads! I’ve heard so many people say it’s a must have for authors, but trying to figure out how to use it effectively has been impossible for me.

As an older writer, I wonder about the written word going away–fear strikes faster when you’re older–yet I know all fear is staid and self-centered, just two of its many qualities. Truly, it is wonderful to hear your actual voice, although I felt as if I were reading your blog but I am a lifelong reader of hearing words on the page.
So, would you consider a vlog about tone? It’s so important in writing, whether it’s social media or craft, whether is vlogging or blogging. Your tone is sincere in its humor as well as the information you provide. We get it when you tell us, which is not the same as doing what you tell us. For that, we practice–a lot.

I will probably have to get a lot more experience before I can give much advice on vlogging. This bit took three days and I had to do over about a zillion times. I am hoping the next go will be easier. But you can rest assured that I WILL teach you guys what I know once I figure out what I am doing…I be an expert, LOL.
I think the written word is stronger now than ever. Vlogs are nice (from what little I have been exposed to) but they have limits. People can’t play them at work, whereas a this person could sneak in reading a blog during their 15 minute break without looking like they were slacking off. I suspect many people will have to wait until they are home to listen to the vlog because of those kind of constraints.

I’ve got one for you. You’ve talked about the publishing industry needing to learn and change. What about writing organizations? With the exception of RWA, organizations like MWA and SFWA still look at traditional publishing as the only way. In fact, whether you publish in smaller venues that don’t quite make their guidelines or you self publish, you aren’t good enough to join. Don’t these organizations perpetuate the idea that traditional publishing is superior? How do you see their future? Does there need to be a Small Press/Self-Publishing Writers of America (or it that myWANA)?

Ooohhhh. Great question. I will think about that and definitely address. I know that I deliberately crafted WANA to be different, to be a bridge between the Old World and the New World. I think Writerkind is stronger together and the infighting really just keeps us distracted with stuff that doesn’t matter. I believe writing groups try hard to keep up, but the Digital Age is moving very quickly so I bet many of them have been waiting for some stability before progressing. Will address this soon!

Seriously, how about marketing tips for introverts? A writer for Forbes had an article in Yahoo! today about that, also about the “culture of extroverts” that seems to have been fostered in the last half-century. This has made its way into the publishing industry as well: Stand out! Push yourself forward! Etc. I can’t even write about it without shuddering. Introvert? Me? Well, yeah, pretty much.

Several things:
1. Is there a #mywana group on Facebook? How do I join?
2. You put out a call for future vlog topics. How about talking about Triberr. I’m on it and can see both benefits and drawbacks. Would love to know what you think.
3. The traditionally published vs. non-traditionally published camp: everybody everywhere needs to feel like they are doing it right. It takes a lot of maturity and open-mindedness to just check out what everybody else is doing and not critique. Or maybe it goes against human nature not to critique. That doesn’t make it any less frustrating, of course. 😀

I thought your response was eloquent Catie. And I agree, it takes an awful lot of personal equilibrium to sit back and take a neutral stance on the multitude of opinions and styles of writing!
Yet I find the comments sections almost more interesting than the original posts sometimes. From the point of view of how fascinating it is, to have a window into what real people think and how real writers out there are doing life.
You’ve expressed a question I’ve had in my mind ever since subscribing to this blog, and failed to get up the gumption to ask. Facebook Wanna? For those of us who don’t tweet. Even my friend who is a tv celebrity here in New Zealand has given up on twitter because the size of the population here simply doesn’t support it. So it is not an option for me. Therefore the Wanna revolution likewise is out of reach for me.

Kristen – I really enjoy your blog because you are so accessible to your readers with your humor, information, sincerity, and experience. I recently started reading your blog because I bought your 2 books on my Kindle as I was doing some research to launch my own blog (on April 1st – pardon the self-promotion!). My interests are creating and improving one’s blog, increasing readership (including using up-to-date social media), learning about relevant and cutting-edge social media for both bloggers/writers, and more about how to vlog. I know that some of these you have addressed in the past in your books and blog, but I wonder if there are updates to any or all of the above topics in which you could blog and vlog. I appreciate your willingness to be a partner to writers/bloggers alike. The bloggers /blogs I like the most are genuine partners in the writing and blogging community; and I want to be a part of this community. As you say “We Are Not Alone” as writers/bloggers and that is good to know for us beginners!!

Wonderful! And wow. If this was your very first attempt at a VLOG, you are going to hitting them out of the park by, well… you’re already doing it. Kudos!
What struck me the most in this message is that when the dust clears, it’s all about writers and readers. Very, very true.

Absolutely fantastic first vlog, Kristen. I love how you made it funny but, at the same time, so informative. BTW, I love Mac cosmetics, and you wear them fabulously, scrunchee or not.

Well dahhhllling, you rocked your vlog. I kept thinking wow, love the green eyeshadow but wouldn’t that have been rad if she’d used blue and taken us back to the sixties with that matching jersey? And she must have farmed out the spawn because there’s no little one in the background interrupting. And can I come visit and you pour me tea from that silver teapot in the background? Crumpets would also be nice with some lemon curd. Okay, your followers are visual writers as you well know.
All kidding aside, you did a fantabulous job and it was great to put a “voice” to your blog articles. Keep workin’ it! Vicki H. Moss

Awwww, thanks, Vicki. I look very Barbara Eden with the blue (not that this is a bad thing) so I might try that. Yes, Hubby took the Spwan for me so I could video in quiet. I am hoping I get faster at this, though…or learn to not be such a perfectionist, LOL.

Love this 🙂 I need a WANA reminder every so often. Especially when I’m in the middle of a whirlwind of words that I keep trying to make sense of, while in a family of business people who don’t get it (…yet! until I make money, that is…)
