We Are Not Alone–Vol. 1

Hey, there! I know it’s only Tuesday, but today I am doing something a little different. I know that I’m tough with you guys about trying new things. What is it I say? “Nothing great happens in the comfort zone.” Wait. I probably poached that off NYTBSA Bob Mayer. Anyway, the sentiment remains. We don’t grow when we are comfortable, and trust me when I say that vlogging was NOT at all comfortable. And I am TOTALLY bummed that the editing process cut off my T-shirt that said “Geek Chic.” Sigh. What is the point of dressing up if no one can see your fancy clothes?

Oh well.

One thing I’ve always tried to impress upon you guys is that I am not above my own advice, and I will never ask anything from y’all that I am unwilling to do as well. So this is my first vlog, and there will be more to come. This is my chance to say hello to all of you and make that digital kick in the tuchus feel much more special and personal, because it is. I love you guys and want to help all of you reach your dreams. Thanks for your time, and thanks for helping spread WANA-The Love Revolution. In fact, feel free to REBLOG this and help spread the love!

So what questions do you have that you might like for me to address on the vlog? Questions about social media? Craft? Which brand of tin foil is best for blocking the alien transmissions? Throw it out there.

I LOVE hearing from you!

And to prove it and show my love, for the month of…heck it is close enough for March, everyone who leaves a comment I will put your name in a hat. If you comment and link back to my blog on your blog, you get your name in the hat twice. If you leave a comment, and link back to my blog, and mention my book We Are Not Alone in your blog…you get your name in the hat THREE times. What do you win? The unvarnished truth from yours truly.

I will pick a winner every week for a critique of your first five pages. At the end of March I will pick a winner for the grand prize. A free critique from me on the first 15 pages of your novel. Good luck!

I also hope you pick up copies of my best-selling books We Are Not Alone–The Writer’s Guide to Social Media and Are You There, Blog? It’s Me, Writer . Both books are ON SALE for $4.99!!!! And both are recommended by the hottest agents and biggest authors in the biz. My methods teach you how to make building your author platform FUN. Build a platform and still have time left to write great books.

That is a great first vlog! I’ve seen quite a few vlogs, but yours definitely takes the cake. If this is your first one, then I can’t wait to see future videos.

    Love your humor, too!

I prematurely shot this into the world yesterday. Love it. Love you. Baby, I’ll drink your Kool-Aid all day. And I love that you say “you guys” — and like Chrisy, above, I too, feel something in the air. Somethin’s a comin’! Someone wrote that. Probably. 😉

    Sorry about spawn.

    • #8 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 9:42 am

I like doing it for you guys, and I’ve been editing so many years it really isn’t a problem, so it adds a little incentive for y’all to get over your shyness :D. Spawn is doing great. He’s on the couch with Daddy and they are reading books and watching cartoons.

      • #9 by lanceschaubert on February 28, 2012 - 9:47 am

        Truth.

Books and Cartoons mend most things. Great battle plan.

  8. #11 by Nigel Blackwell on February 28, 2012 - 9:42 am

Very brave! The video looks good, even in the noise at Starbuck, it should be a good new direction.

Btw, I’m going to be stocking up on alien repellant soon, so which brand is best?

    Cheers!

  9. #12 by Kerstin Broemer on February 28, 2012 - 9:47 am

I’m heading over to #myWANA for some world domination secrets. 🙂 Very cool vlog, Kristen! Who does your makeup? 😉

    • #18 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 10:36 am

Okay, I am assuming you really want to know…

I learned from Mac several years ago. I saw a gal with GORGEOUS makeup and she worked at the Mac counter, so I paid for a makeover and watched carefully. One thing I learned is that it really does pay to get eye makeup from a better brand–Sephora, Mac, etc–because they contain A LOT more pigment so the color is richer. Thus, you use A LOT less. The shadows I use are more costly but they last a LONG time and you don’t keep having to redo your eye makeup all day. I use Sephora photo-finish as a base (got as a free sample), then a mineral foundation from Sephora ($20). Mac blush and Too-Faced eye shadow (A palette of 12 colors–Smoky Eye–is roughly $30). Bronzer by Too Faced and a photo-finish powder by Urban Decay. Long-wear lipstick by Sephora ($9). And, since I wear makeup once in a blue moon, mine lasts a looong time and Ulta 3 Loves me. Normally I am in a scrunchee with no makeup, LOL.

      • #19 by Kecia Adams on February 29, 2012 - 11:49 am

Oooh! Girly stuff. I love it. I spent many an afternoon browsing in Sephora when I lived in Paris, ahem, a while back (and Sephora wasn’t an international brand yet). My go to makeup comes from the grocery store now, but I hear ya on the longer-lasting-thus-ultimately-less-expensive aspect. Thanks for the info!

  15. #20 by Laura Drake on February 28, 2012 - 10:21 am

Okay, so you make me want to do this. And I will.
If I can borrow your looks (oh yeah, I’ll so give them back.)
    AND your Chic Geek T-shirt.

    • #21 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 10:41 am

Go to your local Mac counter. They can make any of us look AMAZING, LOL.

  16. #22 by Patrice Fitzgerald on February 28, 2012 - 10:28 am

Fabulous all around. It helps that you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re articulate… oh, and beautiful. Beautiful is nice to look at.

Now I feel like I really know you a bit! Your personality shines through.

I’m going to do it too! Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement.

  17. #23 by Catherine Johnson on February 28, 2012 - 10:33 am

That was a great vlog Kristen, you’d never know you were nervous. I’ve toyed with the idea for a while, but I have trouble uploading video. I’ll have to get on to it. It’s so nice to hear real voices and real people on here 🙂

    • #24 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 10:40 am

Yeah, well I need to do a vlog of out-takes, LOL. Some of those were funnier than the vlog! I was so nervous.

  18. #25 by August McLaughlin on February 28, 2012 - 10:40 am

Wow, Kristen. I’m totally impressed! Your vlog is fantastic. I’d love to hear and see you cover most anything regarding social media and marketing. I’d love to see TweetDeck, Twitter lists and Twitter-anything in action…

  19. #26 by Shawn on February 28, 2012 - 10:42 am

Kristen defenitly knocked it out of the park for a first time. I’ve seen ALOT of vlogs, but hers is so well done. And it will get even better in time! Keep up the good work honey -your husband and king geek

    • #28 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 10:52 am

No I just lower my standards in other areas, LOL. Don’t ask about the conditions of my closets :D.

  21. #29 by Stacy Green on February 28, 2012 - 11:03 am

Great vlog, Kristen. And thanks for sharing the makeup tips. I was totally jealous of your eye makeup as I watched, lol. As for what topics to talk about, I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on Pinterest, which is something I enjoy and think could be great for authors to expand their audience. And Goodreads! I’ve heard so many people say it’s a must have for authors, but trying to figure out how to use it effectively has been impossible for me.

    Thanks!

  22. #30 by Emaginette on February 28, 2012 - 11:09 am

    Your vlog let you shine.

I know you so much better and that is after I’ve read most of your stuff.

Thanks for reaching out it makes such a difference to me — a very new writer :-).

  23. #31 by Charley Pearson on February 28, 2012 - 11:12 am

“Which brand of tin foil is best for blocking the alien transmissions?” Hmph. As a member of Aliens Anonymous, I would like you to stop telling people which brand actually works. How do you expect us to take over the world if we can’t reach susceptible minds? And it’s getting so hard to hide our spacecraft nowadays with everyone carting around a picture phone. If things don’t get better, I’m teleporting to Arcturus. Mumble, mumble.

  24. #32 by KM Huber on February 28, 2012 - 11:13 am

As an older writer, I wonder about the written word going away–fear strikes faster when you’re older–yet I know all fear is staid and self-centered, just two of its many qualities. Truly, it is wonderful to hear your actual voice, although I felt as if I were reading your blog but I am a lifelong reader of hearing words on the page.

So, would you consider a vlog about tone? It’s so important in writing, whether it’s social media or craft, whether is vlogging or blogging. Your tone is sincere in its humor as well as the information you provide. We get it when you tell us, which is not the same as doing what you tell us. For that, we practice–a lot.

    Thanks so much.
    Karen

    • #33 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 11:23 am

I will probably have to get a lot more experience before I can give much advice on vlogging. This bit took three days and I had to do over about a zillion times. I am hoping the next go will be easier. But you can rest assured that I WILL teach you guys what I know once I figure out what I am doing…I be an expert, LOL.

I think the written word is stronger now than ever. Vlogs are nice (from what little I have been exposed to) but they have limits. People can’t play them at work, whereas a this person could sneak in reading a blog during their 15 minute break without looking like they were slacking off. I suspect many people will have to wait until they are home to listen to the vlog because of those kind of constraints.

  25. #34 by YolandePienaar (@YolandePienaar) on February 28, 2012 - 11:14 am

Wow! This was truly inspiring. I’m still trying to get my head around your book to figure out how to manage two separate entities as I write in two different languages. Your blog posts and books have helped tremendously and I’m sure these vlogs will also prove as valuable as they are. Thanks for putting us writers first.

  26. #35 by kimterry on February 28, 2012 - 11:17 am

One major concern, here, Kristen. Will the video cam, like t.v., make me look ten pounds heavier?

    • #36 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 11:18 am

Not if you film in a room if giant furniture. And you thought those Papasan chairs went out in the early 80s :D.

  27. #37 by Natalie Hartford on February 28, 2012 - 11:18 am

Squeeeee LOVE your first vlog!! Ahhhmazing and AMEN to the MyWANA revolution…I am IN!

    Ditto Stacy Green’s comment.

  29. #39 by kimterry on February 28, 2012 - 11:22 am

I love it! I actually do have giant furniture, considering the size of my house. I’ll start checking around in garage/estate sales for pappasan chairs. 🙂 Seriously, is this going to be the topic of your presentations at DFWCon?

  30. #40 by Judy Salamacha on February 28, 2012 - 11:38 am

  32. #43 by Ryan King on February 28, 2012 - 12:47 pm

I’ve got one for you. You’ve talked about the publishing industry needing to learn and change. What about writing organizations? With the exception of RWA, organizations like MWA and SFWA still look at traditional publishing as the only way. In fact, whether you publish in smaller venues that don’t quite make their guidelines or you self publish, you aren’t good enough to join. Don’t these organizations perpetuate the idea that traditional publishing is superior? How do you see their future? Does there need to be a Small Press/Self-Publishing Writers of America (or it that myWANA)?

    • #44 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 1:09 pm

Ooohhhh. Great question. I will think about that and definitely address. I know that I deliberately crafted WANA to be different, to be a bridge between the Old World and the New World. I think Writerkind is stronger together and the infighting really just keeps us distracted with stuff that doesn’t matter. I believe writing groups try hard to keep up, but the Digital Age is moving very quickly so I bet many of them have been waiting for some stability before progressing. Will address this soon!

  33. #45 by Tom B on February 28, 2012 - 1:26 pm

I like the tin foil idea, but maybe another time? 😉

Seriously, how about marketing tips for introverts? A writer for Forbes had an article in Yahoo! today about that, also about the “culture of extroverts” that seems to have been fostered in the last half-century. This has made its way into the publishing industry as well: Stand out! Push yourself forward! Etc. I can’t even write about it without shuddering. Introvert? Me? Well, yeah, pretty much.

Here’s the link to the Forbes article: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jennagoudreau/2012/01/26/the-secret-power-of-introverts/

BTW I really enjoyed the VLOG below. The mimed “call me!” bit was priceless!

  35. #47 by Suzanne Lucero (@S_Lucero) on February 28, 2012 - 2:01 pm

Your first foray into the vlogosphere is a success, Kristin. Give yourself a pat on the back. I’m running a little behind in the technology; I’m going to try to have my very first web-chat with some fellow-writers tonight. Wish me luck. (PS send me a link that shows how to use eye makeup like you do. I lust after your look. I may not be *quite* as young as you are, and my hair’s not blond–actually, it’s almost all white–but I need to look presentable. BTW, don’t you hate that you have to look good as well as sound good now?)

  36. #48 by Suzanne Lucero (@S_Lucero) on February 28, 2012 - 2:03 pm

Oops, nasty bit of editor-fail there. It’s Kristen, not Kristin. *smacks forehead with keyboard.*

  37. #50 by Karen Cunningham on February 28, 2012 - 2:25 pm

Great vlog, Kristen! I’ve put a few short videos on my blog. It just takes me so darn long to edit them! I’m working my way through WANA and loving it! Thanks for stepping outside your comfort zone and leading the way.

  38. #51 by Julie Glover on February 28, 2012 - 3:12 pm

Fabulous first vlog! I have three questions. First, the Geek Chic t-shirt is great, but are you working on MyWANA shirts? Something like “We Are Not Alone: Writing & World Domination” or “It’s a Love Revolution. #MyWANA.”

Second, where is this Facebook MyWANA celebration happening? I am great at keeping up with blogging, Twitter, and Triberr, but I have sadly let my FB sit alone for days wondering where I went. I’m trying to get better.

Third, how is the new Pinterest craze affecting us writers? Should we be jumping in yesterday?

  39. #52 by Ali Dent on February 28, 2012 - 3:14 pm

You did a great job, Kristen but then 49 others have already told you that. Let me start over. I loved your vlog! If you and Bridgette Booth were not in my life, I would have given up on writing a long time ago. You inspire me and give me courage. WANA makes all the difference. Happy vlogging.

  40. #53 by David Stoddard on February 28, 2012 - 3:39 pm

Ok, now I am feeling the pressure to do a vlog. Now if I am on screen or not, that is yet to be seen. And I won’t hold it against you that you are using a Mac. 🙂 Awesome first post.

    • #54 by Author Kristen Lamb on February 28, 2012 - 4:02 pm

I actually have both. If you look behind me, that big work computer is an HP. See! I practice what I preach. Love. Mac people, PC people, trads, indie, self-pub :D.

Love the vlog! I do have a question about social media. Since you have written “We Are Not Alone–The Writer’s Guide to Social Media” what new social media sites do you think we should pay attention to.

  55. #70 by Shah Wharton (@shahw1) on February 29, 2012 - 11:21 am

Totally loved your energy and enthusiasm. You’ve got my all fired up and well, do you come in a cup to go? 😛

And at last, I now understand the whole myWANA thingy. Although I put that hash tag on my news paper of course, because it’s everywhere and I noticed they were my social group largely too (on Twitter) so I started using it without even know what it was. I was pretty close on my guess though. 🙂 So thats okay.

Excellent post. Have a good week. And oh, go on then. You’re in my blog roll 🙂 X

  56. #71 by Catie Rhodes on February 29, 2012 - 12:00 pm

Loved this. You’re a funny chick. Love your hair. I wish mine would do that. LOL

    Several things:

    1. Is there a #mywana group on Facebook? How do I join?

    2. You put out a call for future vlog topics. How about talking about Triberr. I’m on it and can see both benefits and drawbacks. Would love to know what you think.

    3. The traditionally published vs. non-traditionally published camp: everybody everywhere needs to feel like they are doing it right. It takes a lot of maturity and open-mindedness to just check out what everybody else is doing and not critique. Or maybe it goes against human nature not to critique. That doesn’t make it any less frustrating, of course. 😀

    • #72 by Yvette on February 29, 2012 - 3:53 pm

I thought your response was eloquent Catie. And I agree, it takes an awful lot of personal equilibrium to sit back and take a neutral stance on the multitude of opinions and styles of writing!

Yet I find the comments sections almost more interesting than the original posts sometimes. From the point of view of how fascinating it is, to have a window into what real people think and how real writers out there are doing life.

You’ve expressed a question I’ve had in my mind ever since subscribing to this blog, and failed to get up the gumption to ask. Facebook Wanna? For those of us who don’t tweet. Even my friend who is a tv celebrity here in New Zealand has given up on twitter because the size of the population here simply doesn’t support it. So it is not an option for me. Therefore the Wanna revolution likewise is out of reach for me.

Well, Kristen, you could’ve fooled me. Not comfortable in front of that camera? You keep telling yourself that. I, on the other hand, am about to tweet the heck out of this because it ROCKED.

Nice first, vlog Kristen! I tried vlogging a couple times last month. It’s SO MUCH FUN! Keep it up! Oh and by the way … I wear MAC, too. 🙂

Just watched your vlog for the second time… and gotta say, it’s pretty darn awesome! Feel totally inspired. Shared on my FB & gonna forward to my writer peeps. Working a crazy work schedule, it’s not always easy for me to read a lot of blogs (especially longs ones), so I totally appreciate the vlog! Viva la entrepreneurial spirit! I look forward to your next one. 🙂

Wonderful first vlog. I can’t wait for the next ones. It was great to hear your voice and see you speaking. You’re as lively and funny in person as through written words.

As for vlog topics, I would love to hear a concrete example of your day/week and how you manage your writing activities. Or how you find all the awesome things you share in Facebook 🙂 And maybe something about High Concept Tweeting. How can we expand the stuff we learn in your blogging class to Twitter?

Brilliant, you’re exactly how you sound on this blog, talk about finding your voice? Here it is!!! I see a TV/Youtube series in your future!

This must be one of the best vlogs I’ve seen. Great job.

Kristen – I really enjoy your blog because you are so accessible to your readers with your humor, information, sincerity, and experience. I recently started reading your blog because I bought your 2 books on my Kindle as I was doing some research to launch my own blog (on April 1st – pardon the self-promotion!). My interests are creating and improving one’s blog, increasing readership (including using up-to-date social media), learning about relevant and cutting-edge social media for both bloggers/writers, and more about how to vlog. I know that some of these you have addressed in the past in your books and blog, but I wonder if there are updates to any or all of the above topics in which you could blog and vlog. I appreciate your willingness to be a partner to writers/bloggers alike. The bloggers /blogs I like the most are genuine partners in the writing and blogging community; and I want to be a part of this community. As you say “We Are Not Alone” as writers/bloggers and that is good to know for us beginners!!
    Thanks – Monique

Wonderful! And wow. If this was your very first attempt at a VLOG, you are going to hitting them out of the park by, well… you’re already doing it. Kudos!

What struck me the most in this message is that when the dust clears, it’s all about writers and readers. Very, very true.

    Thanks for an inspiring message!

Absolutely fantastic first vlog, Kristen. I love how you made it funny but, at the same time, so informative. BTW, I love Mac cosmetics, and you wear them fabulously, scrunchee or not.

Squee! Loved seeing you for real here. I’m going to be at RWA12 in Anaheim, and a highlight will be if I get to meet you IN PERSON. *fans self* LOL!

Seriously, this was great, Kristen! Great job!

    You go, grrrrl!
That’s EXACTLY the way to do this: Jump in with both feet.
I liked it. It was engaging. And I LOVED that you “didn’t dress up” for this stint.
As always, you are an inspiration to us all, dear Kristen.

    PREACH.

This is a fantastic video; you did a great job and thank you so much for the message. All us crazy creator types are in this together; spread the loooove. ❤

Well dahhhllling, you rocked your vlog. I kept thinking wow, love the green eyeshadow but wouldn’t that have been rad if she’d used blue and taken us back to the sixties with that matching jersey? And she must have farmed out the spawn because there’s no little one in the background interrupting. And can I come visit and you pour me tea from that silver teapot in the background? Crumpets would also be nice with some lemon curd. Okay, your followers are visual writers as you well know.

All kidding aside, you did a fantabulous job and it was great to put a “voice” to your blog articles. Keep workin’ it! Vicki H. Moss

Awwww, thanks, Vicki. I look very Barbara Eden with the blue (not that this is a bad thing) so I might try that. Yes, Hubby took the Spwan for me so I could video in quiet. I am hoping I get faster at this, though…or learn to not be such a perfectionist, LOL.

Thanks Kristen, as always great info for my own social media efforts. I’m tracking back to this one for sure!
    Thanks,

Love this 🙂 I need a WANA reminder every so often. Especially when I’m in the middle of a whirlwind of words that I keep trying to make sense of, while in a family of business people who don’t get it (…yet! until I make money, that is…)

Thanks for adding a third dimension to yourself. It proves what I’ve been suspecting… you’re cool. B-)
